A Busy Crew is a Successful Crew is a Busy Crew

At our last Crew business meeting, we looked at our “event horizon” and summarized what we saw:

  • June 14 (Yes, Sunday) - Swimming at Bangor Pool.  This will be some serious swimming, multiple laps, not just the simple 100 yards and rest while floating.  Brody will coordinate the logistics on this event.
  • July 4-19 – The big Whitewater Trek, aka Superactivity.  Our next business meeting in June will be dedicated to our final preparations for this event.
  • Aug 15 – Highway Cleanup with the American Legion.  Count on ~2 hrs.
  • Aug 20-23 – Washington Jamboree, aka WashJam.  It’s $35 each for four days, Thursday through Sunday, and includes all activities, including the ranges.  It doesn’t include food, so we’ll need to come up with a menu and cooking plan.
  • Aug 28-30 – Order of the Arrow’s Annual Planning and Training @ Camp Sheppard
  • Sep 11-12 – Venturing Leadership Skills Course/VLSC here in Orca District, and we’re expected to staff it.  We’ll hold our annual Crew elections that weekend, too.
  • Sep 18-19 – Sinclair District’s Kodiak X course.  Those from the Crew who have been through this course may be invited to staff it, so get it on your calendars.  Those from the Crew who will complete the Kodiak Course in July during our Whitewater Trek will need to get registered for this, the follow-on course.
  • Oct 17 – Program and Training Conference 2009 at North Seattle Community College.
  • Oct 17 – Highway Cleanup with the American Legion.  Count on ~2 hrs. Yes, that's the same day as the Seattle PTC.  We'll try to deconflict it.
  • Oct 29 – Biz Mtg w/Movie Night & Lock In, but only if all the school districts have the next day off.
  • Nov 13-15  - Order of the Arrow Fall Rally at Camp Pigott.
  • Dec 26 – REI Seattle Urban Hike.  This will be the first of our Philmont “workups”.  Take your Christmas cash and spend it at the annual REI Holiday Sale for things you’ll need in June and July.
  • 2010 Jan – Dungeness Spit Hike.  10 miles, flat, with full packs.
  • Feb – Walker Mountain Hike.  2.5 miles straight up, then straight down, with full packs.
  • Mar -  Backpacking Workup.  Dosewallips?
  • Apr – Backpacking Workup.  Elwha?
  • May – Backpacking Workup.  Grey Wolf?  Duckabush?
  • Jun 23 – Jul 9.  Philmont Crew 626H.  Fly to Denver, do Pikes Peak and visit the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs.  Arrive in Cimarron on the 26th.  Fly home to Seattle on the 9th.

Others, dates not set: Trainer’s Edge (ex-Trainers Development Conference).  Usually late Feb, early March.  Those who have completed VLSC, Kodiak, Kodiak X, and the new Mentoring Course will need to complete the one-night, one-day Trainer’s Edge course to complete the Venturing Nature of Leadership continuum and be eligible for the new Scouting Youth Leadership Society.  It is our intention to be the first Venturers in this Council to be inducted into the Society.

Wood Badge Spring and Fall Courses (Days 5 & 6).  We’ll make ourselves available to help staff again.

Crew 42 Venturers Win Leadership Award!

Congratulations to Jeff and Devon, who were both selected for the Chief Seattle Council's prestigous 2009 Venturing Leadership Award.   As published in the BSA National Council's literature, the VLA is awarded to those "who have made exception contributions to Venturing and who exemplify the Venturing Code....the Candidate must show exceptional dedication and give outstanding leadership and service to Venturing and to Venturers across the Council."  There are 200 Venturing Crews in the Chief Seattle Council and our Crew won TWO of these very selective awards.

The medallion is suspended on a blue and white ribbon worn around the neck when in a full dress uniform.  An embroidered tri-color square knot is sewn above the left pocket of the uniform shirt for normal use.

Jeff and Devon will receive their awards at the Council Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration in the Seattle Town Hall in March.  They can both compete next year for the Western Region and National level award.

July 2009: Whitewater Rafting Trek

Due to the overwhelming vote, the Crew's 2009 Superactivity will be a 2 week, 132 mile whitewater rafting expedition on the Salmon and Snake Rivers.

Some details about the Trek are located here.  Included are a Kodiak, Kodiak X, ARC Wilderness First Aid certification course, and River Guide training.  We will leave Kitsap on July 4th and return on the 19th.  Contact the Crew President if you intend to go.  A $50 deposit will be required no later than January 15th in order to confirm your registration.  Cost is $300 for registered, active Crew 42 Venturers, $600 for others.  If necessary, we can conduct fundraising events to defray the costs further.  UPDATE: There are still a couple of slots available as of January 23rd.  Call now!

Crew Vision

In preparation for our next Venturing Leadership Skills Course, VLSC, a Crew is required to have a Vision.  At our January Crew business meeting, the below Statement was crafted, then agreed to by all in attendence.

"We The People of Venturing Crew 1042, in order to form a more effective team, establish group activities, ensure proper recognition, provide adult association, promote the Scouting Ideals, and secure the blessings of leadership for ourselves and to others we teach, do ordain and establish this vision for Venturing Crew 1042.  We hold these truths to be self evident, that all Venturers are to have fun, be safe, and support their community.  With the guidance of Divine Providence, we shall uphold these methods and totally pwn anyone who tries to stand against us. We take this vision to heart and shall use our power to maintain it and empower those who have not been enlightened by the awesomeness of our vision.  We would write 42 commandments to aid the upholding of these beliefs; however, we are too busy having fun and enjoying life, liberty, and the pursuit of high adventure."

Don’t Panic.

A Trained Committee

Congratulations to our American Legion members, the backbone of our Crew Committee, who graduated from the Venturing Leader Specific Training (VLST) course on February 7th.  With Bob Theal, Dave Allfrey, Bill Bogardus, Tina Wood, Fred Reitmeyer, and Brent Arnold now trained, we have completed our adult training pledge as the Crew pursues the Centennial Quality Unit Award.  We hope to attain all our recorded goals in time for the BSA Centennial Year in 2010 and earn the CQUA.  Crew President Jeff and Admin VP Jake also took VSLT as youth participants.  They will arrange a graduation ceremony for the Committee at a future Legion meeting.
